DENVER — Nineteen utilities will go head-to-head — or sip-to-sip — in a national water-tasting competition during the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) (http://www.awwa.org/) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE09), set for June 14-18 at the San Diego, CA, Convention Center.

The ACE “Best of the Best” Water Taste Test is scheduled for June 15; once the competition is completed, scores will be tabulated and a winner will be announced.

Finalists in this competition won their most recent AWWA Section taste tests. According to AWWA Public Affairs Manager Deirdre Mueller, judges will taste tap water from the following utilities:

● City of Allegan, MI

● City of Aurora, IL, Water Production Division

● City of Bloomington, MN

● Centerville City, UT

● Denver (CO) Water

● City of Enderlin, ND

● Louisville (KY) Water Co.

● Macon (GA) Water Authority

● Marshalltown (IA) Water Works

● New York City Department of Environmental Protection

● City of Olathe (KS) Water Production

● Orangeburg (SC) Dept. of Public Utilities

● Village of Palm Springs, FL

● Matuyas Filter Plant, Maunabo, Puerto Rico

● Silverdale (WA) Water District

● St. Charles (LA) Water District No. 1

● Toronto (Ontario) Water

● Valdez (AK) Main

● Waupun (WI) Utilities.

According to the AWWA Web site (http://www.awwa.org/Conferences/Content.cfm?ItemNumber=3400&navItemNumber=3401), the judging panel will be a mix of local public figures and flavor-profile analyzers. Judges will score samples from “good (1)” to “best (10)”. Only the winning sample will be announced, and samples will not be ranked, nor will scores be released.
