Which way is the right way to hookup a softner ?
I see some that hookup L-R and others R-L
What happens if you hookup wrong by accident ?

It is critical that you connect the system correctly as specified by the manufacturer.
If the equipment is well-built, the worst thing that will happen is that the system just won't soften the water. If your manufacturer wen "cheap" and didn't use a top distributor basket, then you could push resin media through your home - not good.
Most manufacturers plumb IN on the RIGHT and OUT on the LEFT when facing the system, but there are some exceptions:-
A list off the cuff from memory of major valve models:-
IN on RIGHT, OUT on LEFT
====================
Fleck 5600, 6600, 6700, 7000, Twinflo-
All Erie diaphragm valves
All Clack WS1 series valves, including proprietary builds
IN of LEFT, OUT on RIGHT
===================
All Autotrol models, including Hamilton Beach & Technetics
All Erie rotary models
I don't think there as a right or wrong here, but IN on RIGHT and OUT on LEFT is definitely the traditional industry standard

Northstar Softeners are in on the Right, out on the Left
What about Northstar ?
