B1366 - Call to Action

It has been a few months since we last emailed you for your assistance in encouraging Governor Schwarzenegger to veto AB 2270 that would have banned residential water softeners. We need your help once more. A new bill, AB 1366, has emerged this year and it looks virtually no different than last year.
We are strongly encouraging you to take a few moments to contact the legislative committee that is now considering this bill and make sure it does not pass. If it becomes law, municipal water softener bans could start emerging very quickly.
Below are directions for writing to committee members. It is critical your letter arrive within the next two weeks. Assembly Bill 1366 would allow any local agency with a community sewer system to ban the use of residential water softeners by local ordinance, simply based on a “finding at public hearing.” This means bans could be set in place with no scientific data and no meaningful studies or hearings.
In addition to sending a letter, please take advantage of the updated www.savemysoftener.com site. We are letting hundreds of thousands of California residents know about this resource, which includes easy-to-use links to allow them to tell their local representatives ‘no.’ We are encouraging WQA and PWQA members to use the savemysoftener.com and also fax a letter to our lobbyist in Sacramento to ensure prompt delivery.
WQA & PWQA have successfully worked with legislators for thirty years to avoid these kind of drastic measures. With your help, we can continue protecting your business and your customers.

How to contact committee members about AB 1366:
(1) Use this link to find your legislator: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html
(2) You may use the following draft language for your letter:
“Dear <LEGISLATOR>:
As an <EMPLOYEE/OWNER> of <COMPANY NAME>, doing business in your district, I am writing to strongly oppose AB 1366. This bill threatens not only my business and its employees but also the water quality of many homeowners in the area. By allowing bans on water softeners with simple “findings,” this bill would overturn decades of sensible policy and possibly shut the doors on my company.
The water treatment industry supports effective approaches to the problems that this bill is supposed to fix. But AB 1366 will throw many people out of work during this recession without providing any long-term solutions.
PLEASE OPPOSE AB 1366.
Sincerely
(3) Please fax your letter to our lobbyist Pete Conaty. Fax: 916-492-8957. Pete will personally deliver your letter to your representative.
