Most, if not all municipal water usually meets or exceeds federal (USEPA) minimum safety standards. Don't let anyone try to tell you that your city water will kill you or anyone else.
Regular softeners can be seriously damaged by heavy metals and chlorine, so look for something that has a good quality US made resin and the ability to resist chlorine attrition and metal fouling. I strongly recommend systems that incorporate performance enhancers like Pur-Gard.
I personally want my water to be as clean as absolutely possible, so that I can be assured that there's as little as possible there to negatively affect my health. I look for the very highest quality water that I can afford, and I want the system in my own home to address as many contaminants as possible (hardness, heavy metals, chlorine, tastes, odors etc...).
I will not comment about LifeSource directly except to say that their system does not remove calcium from water.
If I were shopping for a softener today, I'd want to answer the following questions:-
1. How long do I want it to last ?
2. Is it sized correctly to meet my household requirements ?
3. Will it handle the high water pressures found here in Utah ?
4. Will it produce enough flow to serve my household ?
5. Do I have enough room for it ?
6. Does it have the ability minimize bacterial growth within itself ?
7. Do I like the slimy feel of regular soft water, or do I want something that feels less slimy, like a Home Empowered Water System (* an Intermountain product)
8. Is the dealer a WQA member (http://www.wqa.org) ?
9. Is the salesman a WQA Certified Water Specialist ?
10. Is the company positively reviewed on Angieslist ?
11. Does the company have any negatives/unresolved issues on record at the Better Business Bureau ?
12. Is the company properly licensed by your State ?
The 12 questions above will help weed out the opportunists and scam artists & get you in touch with experts who actually can help you get the water quality that you deserve.

Make sure your service provider does proper testing & gives you a copy of the results. The dog&pony show is fun to watch, but make sure he/she uses real test methods (HACH/LAMOTTE) and has fresh chemicals.
Make sure whoever you buy from can actually support the product you buy.
Ask for testimonials.

Hello,
My name Is Matt Mahany I live in Kennewick, WA and would be glad to test your water and share some different options with you. I am guessing you are dealing with Bob Black. he seems like a good guy and the lifesource system is not bad. but for the water in your area it may not be the best option. It just depends on what quality of water you want.

Hi Matt & everyone
Yes, I'm dealing with Mr Black and he has been very nice and seems knowledgable about his product. Researching on the internet though, I can't find anything that says if his system can really soften the water or not. I've even seen some sites that say lifesource is a scam, so I'm pretty confused about everything.
What I'm looking for, is a environmentally friendly solution to give me clean water that has no calcium minerals or tastes/oders in it.
What do you recommend ?
Matt, do you work for a soft water company?

The life source system is a good system to help with taste and odors but will not take any hardness out of the water
They hint towards it softening the water and I have even heard that it will clean out your pipes for you. Which is not true.
I would have to test your water to know exactly what is best for your home. but I have had the best luck with a system called empowered water or mr smart bottle. you can youtube.com search for mr smart bottle and they have a 5 minute video you can watch.
The smart bottle is very efficient, environmentally friendly, softens the water, addresses tastes, odors and is bacteriastatic. IT is not slimy and tastes better than bottled water everywere in your home.
I work for Aarrow plumbing as the water treatment guy.
