I am frequently asked about how to sanitize a water softener.
Many manufacturers recommend chlorine sanitization, but due to the risk of excessive resin damage, I prefer a more gentle approach using Pur-Gard. Pur-Gard creates the perfect chemistry in a water treatment system to kill bacteria and remove significant quantities of biofilm.
What you need: 1qt. of Pur-Gard per cubic foot of system capacity
Your time required: Approx 20 minutes
Procedure:
1. Begin system regeneration sequence
2. Advance regeneration to "Ion Exchange" cycle
3. Detatch brine-line tubing
4. Insert brine line tubing into Pur-Gard bottle
5. Allow system to draw contents of Pur-Gard bottle
6. Repeat for additional bottles as necessary
7. Reattach brine line to brine tank
8. Allow system to complete regeneration on it's own
That's all there is to it, feel free to post any questions or comments here.
