Looks like a shiny new forum... I hope there's someone here who can help me fix my stinky well water.

We live on a small farm in Idaho. We have a drilled well that's about 20 years old. My husband put in a water softener about 3 years ago and now the water smells really bad from every hot water faucet.

What can we do to make the water smell better ?

thx

Some more information please...

Have you had any water testing done ?

Is the smell metallic, musty or like rotten eggs ?

Neverhad water tested. Wat do we need to test for?
Metallic smell, like a steel pipe.
Hubby says we have PEX pipes in the house.

The following data will be extremely helpful:-

Iron, hardness, tds, pH, total alkalinity, TDS
Have tests done from THREE places - Untreated water, soft cold, soft hot.

Do you notice any cloudiness in the water from the water heater ?

What kind of softener do you have ?

Don't drink any of that hot water !

Check your sacrificial anode, it's probably corroded.

My husband had the university extension do some tests-

OUTSIDE
=======
Ferrous Iron = 0ppm
Ferric Iron = 0.6ppm
Calcium Carbonate Hardness = 200mg/l
TDS = 342 ppm

SOFT COLD
=========
Ferrous Iron = 0ppm
Ferric Iron = 0.03ppm
Calcium Carbonate Hardness = 50mg/l
TDS = 391 ppm

SOFT HOT
=======
Ferrous Iron = 0ppm
Ferric Iron = 0.1ppm
Calcium Carbonate Hardness = 20mg/l
TDS = 562 ppm

We have a Northstar softener - 3 years old.
Hot water is cloudy for about a minute if you pour it into a glass then it clears

What do we do now?

Looking at that data, the following is clearly apparent:-

1. Your softener is NOT working properly
2. Ion_avenger has a good point about your scrificial anode, the TDS is so high in your hot water that one coulf quickly conclude that the anode is indeed corroding.

Did you get pH data ?

When the cloudiness clears, does it clear from top-bottom, or bottom to top ?

What is the maximum flow rate of the well pump and what are the pressure cut-in/cut-out settings ?
