Hi
Our family just purchased a home in Springville, the house has a Kinetico softener.I've always had the regular salt-softeners and never one of these sal-free kineticos.I see it has a tank like my old softener, but what do I put in instead of salt? The realtor said that its salt free and maintenance free, but I'm sure thats not quite the case. I called Kinetico SLC and they want 75 bucks just to come and look at it-that aint happening! Can anyone help me with an idea of what needs to be done to keep it running ? thanks.

The Kinetico system is a mechanical control, that alternates between two tanks. sometimes many times per day.
The "salt-free" claim is a misnomer, since this is a regnerant-based softener.
You should have a tank connected to your system that holds salt. You can use sodium chloride or potassium chloride salt. Some people say the potassium chloride is not really salt, but it is still salt, just not sodium salt.
Fill your tank with salt, add a good resin cleaner and let it run for a week or two. Get a soft water test kit from your local softener guy or Sears or order one online and test your water to see how its doing.
My experience with Kinetico systems is that they are generally reliable, but have very low flow rates. If your hardness is above 10gpg, I wouldn't advise using a Kinetico system for fear of hardness leakage through the bed at high flow rates (flows higher than 10gpm).
