It's still going on, Google "Clack softener" and you'll still find them all over the place. I do notice that the selling prices have increased...

This is a tough one for me...I want end users to get the very best deals online, but I see/hear so many horror stories about improper installations, cross connections and misapplications that I really do worry about people's health & safety when doing DIY installations.

I understand the perspective of the dealer who feels like his livelihood is threatened by DIY, but I really don't think that's actually the case. How many home owners are really going to buy a system online, have it shipped to there home, assemble, plumb, disinfect and program it and then take responsibility for periodic disinfection & maintenance?
Most good dealers use solutions that are custom-tailored for the specific applications that aren't even available online so I don't see that as much of an issue.

I also understand the perspective of the DIY'er who just "has to do it himself/herself" wanting access to professional products.

I think the eventual line to be drawn will be between "generic products" and custom/professional systems that are installed and maintained by professionals. I also see a lot of local professionals

This whole "issue" will probably blow over into something like the auto industry where there are a plethora of backyard mechanics and a strong contingent of credible industry professionals who cater to people who want it done right by a professional.

Dude, homeowners have no place doing their own plumbing or softener installations.
DIY just makes a mess for everyone, it makes my job harder because I have to undo others messes and people don't get the value proposition between the crappy generic stuff and the good stuff. There should be absolutely no sales to DIY!

I googled "Clack Softener" and saw NOTHING on google shopping, this is just too cool! When will Pentair grow a pair of balls and cut off internet sales on their valves?

http://www.watervalue.com/clackws1/cm_32b_b500.html These guys are still selling softeners with Clack heads online - I wonder if the poor suckers who buy them realize they're not going to get any support? - I wonder if the OEM who sells to them knows they could get their buying privileges revoked? Does Nelsen sell to these guys?

I got this off their about us page- Water Value Company is an Internet based water treatment equipment supplier. The products we carry are only the finest Professional Grade products available. These devices and systems are new, not refurbished, and ship directly from the factory.

We methodically test and use the products we sell before we make them available for sale. That way, if a customer has a technical question, we are able to provide an answer right away. We take our commitment to customer satifaction very seriously. It is our goal to provide all of the information and education that is needed for you to choose the proper water treatment system for your needs.

Our equipment technicians are constantly updating their training both through the manufacturer's training seminars and by visits to production facilities. Because local plumbing codes and regulations vary from location to location, we are unable to answer your specific water pipe plumbing connection questions. Rest assured though that our water treatment equipment systems all come complete with as many extra features as we could think of to make your connection requirements as simple and straight-forward as possible.

Thank you for your consideration.
